7-14-24 - Jealousy and Dinosaur Discoveries

The readings for this week are 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19 and Psalm 24, or Amos 7:7-15 and Psalm 85:8-13, with Ephesians 1:3-14, and Mark 6:14-29.  This week we look at how paleontology got off to a weird start as a scientific field due to Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope and how their jealousy for each other impacted the whole field.  It is easy to see how we as humans all do this and how it can greatly impact how we work and relate with others.  Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

7-7-24 - Challenges of Returning Home

The readings for this week are 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10 and Psalm 48, or Ezekiel 2:1-5 and Psalm 123,  with 2 Corinthians 12:2-10, and Mark 6:1-13.  This week we look at the reintroduction of wolves into Colorado.  There is a lot of hope on how it could be beneficial to the environment long term, there are some current challenges of having them reenter the former lands; free range cattle.  Figuring out this balance so that both can benefit is challenging and hard but is currently being worked through and hopefully makes for a stronger Colorado for many years to come.  Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

6-30-24 - From Lament to Renewal

The readings for this week are 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 with Psalm 130, or Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15, 2:23-24 or Lamentations 3:22-33 with Psalm 30, 2 Corinthians 8:7-15, and Mark 5:21-43.  This week we look at what happens to an environment when it is given the opportunity to heal.  The process of renewing an area takes a lot of time and observation/awareness, but it is able to give in abundance.  Are we willing to give the time needed to have these gifts be seen?  Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

2024 Gustavus Academy of Faith, Science, and Ethics

After advertising and talking about it for months, I was able to attend Gustavus' Academy of Faith, Science, and Ethics for 2024 again this year.  I had an amazing time interacting with this amazing group of young adults and hearing how they see Faith and Science working together and also the questions they have.  It was also fun to listen and think about sleep and how it affects us.  I believe listening to this, gives us a glimpse of the questions that some of the younger people are wrestling with in regards to Faith and Science.  Hopefully, this encourages all of us to keep the conversation going.

6-9-24 - Long-Term Impact on Faith and Life

The readings for this week are 1 Samuel 8:4-11, (12-15), 16-20, (11:14-15) and Psalm 138, or  Genesis 3:8-15 and Psalm 130,  2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1, and Mark 3:20-35.  This week we discuss how humans struggle to think long term.  We are here and now people and at times this leads to us falling into traps we otherwise wouldn't.  We see that we have a God who challenges us to go beyond our short term thought and remember what we have done in the past that could affect our future.  The "Wild Boar Paradox" is a great example of this.  Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

6-2-24 - Action in Sabbath

The readings for this week are 1 Samuel 3:1-10 (11-20) with Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18, or Deuteronomy 5:12-15 with Psalm 81:1-10, 2 Corinthians 4:5-12, and Mark 2:23-3:6.  This week we discuss how Jesus caused the Pharisees to challenge their understanding of Sabbath.  We in the same way need to be able to challenge our understanding of what is normal.  We are seeing microplastics affecting the earth all over in many different ways and when do we say enough is enough and challenge our understanding of normal.  Rethinking this and seeing the whole eco-system as part of the creation that we are tasked with taking care of, might cause us in our Sabbath to come out and take action in small ways.  Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

5-26-24 - Holy Trinity and Human Complexity

The readings for this week are Isaiah 6:1-8, Psalm 29, Romans 8:12-17, and John 3:1-17.  This week we discuss like our triune God we all have many sides of us and have to be okay with showing them some.  We focus in on Roald Dahl who is most known for his writing of books but yet has made significant contributions to science that we all are still benefiting from. 5-19-24 - Pentecost and Ecological Succession

The readings for this week are Acts 2:1-21, Ezekiel 37:1-14, Psalm 104:24-34, 35b, Romans 8:22-27, and John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15.  This week we discuss how ecological succession seems to be quite similar to the coming of the Holy Spirit.  In order for the Advocate to come, there had to be some painful events that concluded with Jesus' assentation and leaving us.  In order for us to get the full gift of him, he had to leave.  We see this in nature, that succession is a natural and important part of ecosystems and without it, ecosystems would be vulnerable to any small change around them.
