6-8-25 - The Chemistry of Pentecost
Jun 2, 2025

27 min
The readings for this week for the Day of Pentecost are Acts 2:1-21, or Genesis 11:1-9, Psalm 104:24-34, 35b, Romans 8:14-17, or Acts 2:1-21, and John 14:8-17, (25-27). This week we look at chemical reactions. We are most familiar with how water is a great solvent and is able to dissolve many things that we run across. Yet, there are reactions that water is a major part of that are able to precipitate something more valuable based on what is in the water. We often like to limit God and we can see that the disciples are trying to do the same thing here and are missing the true power of what the Holy Spirit was about to bring. I honestly think we still miss how amazing the Holy Spirit really is still today. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.
Remember to answer this week's question:
Where have you been surprised when you thought you knew the answer to something? #FaithandSciPod

The readings for this week for the Seventh Sunday of Easter are Acts 16:16-34, Psalm 97, Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21, and John 17:20-26. This week we look at Bias. When we are thinking about using and designing AI, this is a topic of discussion and something that has to be considered. This is something that we as humans can struggle with and be blind to. Yet, in our faith we are called to be aware of it and try to figure out ways around it and draw closer to God with everyone, not just the ones that we would like there. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for the Sixth Sunday of Easter are Acts 16:9-15, Psalm 67, Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5, John 14:23-29 or John 5:1-9. This week we look at Coral Reefs and how scientists have been working with music to help restore the reefs. This shows yet again how we need to listen and hear the voice of God to be able to be in the places that God wants us. When we do this the chance of growth seems to increase. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for the Fifth Sunday of Easter are Acts 11:1-18, Psalm 148, Revelation 21:1-6, and John 13:31-35. This week we look at walleye populations and how they are doing well in certain areas and not so well in other areas. Unfortunately, these are not in the areas where people want them to do well. Are we willing to love enough to see the issues that walleyes are going through and see how we can make a difference? Are we willing to love beyond humankind to see God's creation as part of what we need to love? Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for the Fourth Sunday of Easter are Acts 9:36-43, Psalm 23, Revelation 7:9-17, and John 10:22-30. This week we look at how the internet started. The plan was simple and small in scope when compared to how it is used today. It has expanded greatly from when it first was used to connect some college computers. We need to make sure that we are not doing the same thing with God and arbitrarily limiting God. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for the Third Sunday of Easter are Acts 9:1-6, (7-20), Psalm 30, Revelation 5:11-14, and John 21:1-19. This week we look at carnivorous plants. These plants have had to adapt to poor soil conditions where nutrients are at a premium, these plants have evolved to figure out ways to survive. They adapted to these conditions. Jesus' disciples had to adapt to the new conditions of Jesus no longer being there and transitioning to leading the movement. We all need to continue to learn how we can continue to evolve and change as well in our ministries. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for the Second Sunday of Easter are Acts 5:27-32, Psalm 118:14-29 or Psalm 150, Revelation 1:4-8, and John 20:19-31. This week we look at how Thomas was doing us a huge favor in his "doubt". In that process, Thomas was able to do the scientific method to help us 2,000 years later to see it in a way that we are familiar with. I don't see this as lacking faith, but a way to see that it wasn't a fluke. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.

The readings for this week for Easter Vigil is Exodus 14:10-31; 15:20-21. The readings for this week for the Resurrection of the Lord: Acts 10:34-43 or Isaiah 65:17-25, Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24, 1 Corinthians 15:19-26 or Acts 10:34-43, and John 20:1-18 or Luke 24:1-12. Finally, the readings for Easter Evening are: Isaiah 25:6-9, Psalm 114, 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8, and Luke 24:13-49. This week we look at how even in science, breakthroughs that change our thoughts on what we think is possible can happen. Who knew that some weird things happening with hermaphrodite worms can change our opinions on how gene expression can happen much like how Jesus changed our opinions on what God could do and what death really was/is. The readings for this week for the Liturgy of the Palms are: Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29, and Luke 19:28-40. The readings for this week for the Liturgy of the Passion are: Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 31:9-16, Philippians 2:5-11, and Luke 22:14-23:56 or Luke 23:1-49. This week we look at how we can forget all the work that happens in order for us to live the life that we have. We can forget "heroes" that changed our lives and allowed for us to be able to live easier by their discoveries that led to death. Understanding how Yellow Fever was spread was key in further understanding the world around us and getting us to get a greater appreciation for what Christ did for us as well. The readings for this week for the Fifth Sunday in Lent are: Isaiah 43:16-21, Psalm 126, Philippians 3:4b-14, and John 12:1-8. This week we look at plants and compare the benefits and drawbacks of annuals and perennials. We see that each has their place and are needed but like Jesus talks about in the gospel, sometimes we need to be okay with putting lots of effort into the present. This does not mean not looking to the future or looking back to the past, but it can't hold us back as well. It is a fine line to walk, but as people walk out the faith, it is necessary. Thanks again for taking the time out to listen to this and I hope this is a tool that you find useful.
